THE COURSES
Tieke
The most recent addition to the golfing scene in Waikato, Tieke Golf Estate, presents a challenge different from anything else in the region. Like alot of courses in the region, it is based on the banks of the picturesque Waikato River, but with it comes a daunting prospect of risk and reward; several holes overlooking the country's longest river metres from the dreaded out-of-bounds markers.
With tightly kept fairways flanked by treacherous waste bunkers puts driving the ball well at an absolute premium. Undulating greens combined with slick runoffs and dense rough defending the putting surface, this Phil Tataurangi-designed loop presents a combination of challenges throughout your 18 holes, albeit from an array of tees. Tieke is a delight to the eye and a pleasure to play.

St. Andrews
Nestled in suburban Hamilton lies the entertaining St Andrews Golf Club. The layout couldn't be more different to its Scottish namesake; towering pine trees line the fairways. This makes one reconsider removing a headcover from their driver; wayward tee shots punished, but leaving yourself in the correct position can certainly yield low scores.
Several national events have been held here, most recently, the 2023 New Zealand Amateur. Aside from the towering timber skirting the fairways, St Andrews' newly renovated bunkering and firm and fast greens mean placement and precision are continually at a premium.
With a sizeable, welcoming member base, the club is always delighted to host visitors near and far to view this tidy members' layout.
Walton
Take a journey on Waikato’s back roads to Walton, surrounded by a region of lush, green hills, bush and farmland. In New Zealand’s golfing circles, this place is widely regarded as one of the better hidden gems to play at. A true country club feel, take your time to relax and meet the local people, and unwind on an easy walking course with stunning trees and well defined fairways. The locals love seeing visitors come and experience their pride and joy.
Only a short drive to Hobbiton, and on the way to the Bay of Plenty from Auckland and Hamilton, it is without a shadow of doubt worth getting your sticks out here.
